Whether children are already excelling in the classroom or are in need of remediation, I recognize and respond to students’ individual strengths and areas of need to maximize their potential as they improve their conceptual understanding of materials, their ability to apply learned skills in practical settings, their general depth of knowledge, and their confidence.
Children may be primarily auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learners; I find strategies that result in their success. Techniques are shared and practiced so that students can achieve success on their own. I have considerable experience working with students with emotional and academic special needs (including giftedness) and am Orton-Gillingham trained.
Students’ language proficiency often determines their general academic ability, so a strong foundation is necessary for all academic subjects. My doctorate in language and literacy, together with my Orton-Gillingham training and years of experience have prepared me to help students of all ages and abilities in all types of language arts areas including phonics, grammar, writing, decoding/encoding, reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, ESL, expressive and receptive deficits, and more.
Children who struggle with math often do so because they are missing a key skill or two that prevents them from advancing to more complex mathematical concepts. As a result, students often become frustrated, confused, and, sometimes, angry. By helping children build a solid foundation and helping them make concrete various concepts and processes they find abstract, I help children not only successfully move beyond their anticipated abilities but, often, begin to actually enjoy (and even love!) math.
Executive functions include many skills which are essential for student success in school and life, more generally. Students who struggle with working memory, sustained attention, planning and prioritization, organization, time management, flexibility, and/or goal-directed persistence can benefit from executive functioning coaching tailored to their needs.
In most schools, very little time is devoted to teaching students how to break down their homework into manageable tasks, how to properly take notes, make a study guide, or how to prioritize assignments. As a result, as tasks become increasingly challenging, many students can hit a “wall," regardless of how smart they are or how well they have done in the past. Providing students with skills necessary to maximize their study time allows them to focus more on the content of what they are learning and, usually results in higher performance and lower anxiety.
"When we think of the time and money we spent on other tutors and all we put Abigail through, we just want to scream. We are so grateful that we finally found you! It took just one intensive summer to help Abigail move up 2 years of reading and get her on grade level. It's now six months later, and she loves reading and is doing better in all her classes."

"You helped her love school again. If that isn't the biggest endorsement you can get, I don't know what is."
— Jim
